Alejandro S. Martínez (Havana, 1990) is one of the most versatile figures and leading exponents of the contemporary Cuban cello scene. Trained from the age of seven under the guidance of renowned teachers such as Gladys Lo and Juan Verdera, he completed his studies at the University of the Arts (ISA) with the Título de Oro, the highest academic distinction in Cuba. His talent was recognized early on when he was awarded second prize at the National UNEAC Cello Competition in 2009, of which he is now an active member.
His artistic profile is marked by remarkable versatility, which has led him to explore fields such as historical performance, jazz, and electronic music—opening new horizons for the contemporary cello. He has shared the stage across Europe with leading international musicians such as Xavier Sabata, Leo Brouwer, Aldo López-Gavilán, Gerard Lesne, Ricardo Gallén, Iñaki Alberdi, Asier Polo, Aitzol Iturriagagoitia, Ara Malikian, José Ángel Babiano among others, as well as performing with ensembles such as Suakai, Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, Euskal Barrokensemble, Alòs Quartet, Ars Longa, ĒTHĘR Ensemble (among others), and his own creation: Sociedad de Cámara, which presents numerous concerts, particularly in Navarra.
As a soloist, he has performed with major Cuban and Basque orchestras, including the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, the Liceum Mozartiano Orchestra of Havana, and in the Basque Country, the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra (OSE) and the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra (BOS). He also collaborates as a conductor with orchestras such as Lautadako Orkestra.
As an arranger, producer, and composer, his works have been performed by renowned soloists and ensembles such as the Havana Chamber Orchestra, the Trío Lecuona, and the Trío Concertante. He has also produced numerous recordings that recover and celebrate Cuban musical heritage, including Gulumbá Gulumbé and Sonidos de la antigua Habana (the first Cuban album dedicated to organ music).
Alejandro has made a decisive contribution to enriching the Cuban repertoire for cello. Now based in the Basque Country, he continues to expand his musical impact across Europe, establishing himself as an essential voice on the current musical landscape.
